5 Essentials Every Website Needs

Whether you’re designing your own website or hiring a designer. Here are 5 essentials you must have on your website.

Katie Davidson

A UX designer with roots in digital marketing.

Weather you’re looking to build your own website, or hire a professional here are 5 website essentials your website must have.

Your Services
This is probably the most important page to get right – and it breaks my heart when I see services pages done poorly.
You need to CLEARLY communicate what you can do for your customers. Too often I see service pages crammed full of jargon, or tech specs that make no sense to the customer. Make sure your website makes sense to your customers – speak in their terms.
Before you hit publish on your services page, ask a friend who doesn’t work in your industry to take a look. If they don’t understand what your services are, try again.
I also recommend that you don’t call your services page something more descriptive. For example, I have two service pages one I call “Website Design” the other I call “Social Media Marketing” On each of those I describe in detail what those services include.

A functioning contact form
Before you finish reading this post, please go test that your contact form is working!
This sounds like a no-brainer, but if your customers can’t contact you if they have sales questions, they’re going to head right on over to your competitors.

Email Registration
Email marketing is still one of the most powerful digital marketing tools out there. If you don’t have an effective way of collecting emails, you are missing out BIG TIME. If you take a peak around my website, I have tons of different methods for collecting emails from potential clients. Hint: those freebies I keep offering are my sneaky way of asking you for your email address – I promise you get something good in return though!
Asking people to sign up for your newsletter isn’t going to do the trick, you have to offer them something valuable in exchange. I’ve even created my own opt-in incentive just for this blog post!

Good hosting
Good 24/7 customer support is an absolute must. Something’s bound to go wrong at some point, and you want hosts that are on your team. I LOVE SiteGround (Affiliate link) I’ve never had more than a 5 minute hold time when I’ve called in, and they don’t stop working on the problem until it’s fixed (even if it is my fault).
A few extra bonus features:

  1. 99.99% uptime
  2. Free site migration when you switch to them
  3. Great page load speeds
  4. Great security features for WordPress Sites

Sharing Options
Make it easy for your customers to share your website, add in social share options on all your blog pages so your fans can share your blog posts with just one click.
My favorite social share WordPress plugin is Social Warfare by Warfare Plugins (affiliate link) you can see it in action on this website. I like it because I can fully customize the design, which means it doesn’t clash with my design.
